Description
The watermelon radish has been gaining popularity — and for good reason. A member of the root vegetable family, it originates from the heirloom Chinese Daikon radish. While it’s related to vegetables like arugula, broccoli, and turnips, its vibrant appearance sets it apart from all its “veggie siblings.” Even compared to a regular radish, the watermelon radish is truly unique.
Despite the name, it doesn’t taste like watermelon — the name comes from its striking pink-and-green interior, reminiscent of the fruit we all know and love. It has a mild peppery kick, which can be avoided by removing the spicier outer layer and enjoying the sweeter, tender center.
Like other root vegetables, the watermelon radish is nutritious from top to bottom — its leaves are rich in vitamins, while its crisp flesh is a good source of calcium.
